"Me Time" with Thirsty Painter: Self-care

What is self-care?

The practice of taking an active role in protecting one's own well-being and happiness, in particular during periods of stress."

Why does self-care matter?

Although it is a simple concept, it is something we very often overlook. However, it is never too late to create a self-care routine. Self-care is key to improving your mood and reducing anxiety. Also in case you think self-care is being selfish, it certainly isn’t. Remember it’s all about looking after yourself and your needs. If you don’t take care of yourself then how can you take care of your loved ones.

There are many things that you can do to support your wellbeing. One thing to do is something you are passionate about, passion is an essential part of combating stress and anxiety.

So how does creativity support your

wellbeing?

Whether you paint like Van Gogh or colour outside of the lines, a study by Drexel University found that making art can significantly reduce stress-related hormones in your body. Looking back at your childhood, how many paintings did you run home to show your loved ones, guaranteeing you're bursting with pride about the masterpiece you’ve just created, you just felt happy. Studies show that stress hormones such as cortisol can decrease after doing something creative and that even after we have finished creating something, happiness will continue long after. Being creative isn’t just about what we create but it is tapping into the emotional benefits that lead to stress reduction. Being creative also helps you to be more mindful and present at that moment.

2020 has certainly taught us that we have to slow down and take some time out for ourselves. Every month we host online paint events, providing a space for you to learn new techniques through step by step guidance, as well as the opportunity to socialise with new people without having to leave home.
